The American Fidelity Mentoring Program is a formal program designed “to develop AF’s future, one Colleague at a time.” It is open to all Colleagues seeking a development opportunity through informal learning and knowledge sharing.

In 2015, 104 Colleagues participated in the mentoring program and we’ve just kicked off the program for 2016. Last year was the first year we tried a new “online dating” style of matching mentees to mentors, which helped ensure the mentees were partnered with someone who could help them reach their goals for the mentorship.

Here are just a few things last year’s participants had to say about the program.

“When using the online application, I really wanted to be paired with the person who said ‘the older I get the more I realize the less I know.’ When I had my first meeting with Jonathan, one of the first things he said was that quote, so the online pairing worked! My team was going through a major technology transition during this time and it was great to bounce ideas off of each other during that process.” Rachael C., Health Services Administration, mentee of Jonathan H., assistant VP of IT Services

“Through the mentorship I was able to meet with our affiliates and learn more about the organization as a whole with lots of hands-on experiential learning.” Pat B., Actuarial, mentee of Lorianne K., Law

“I was excited to be partnered with someone in Field Sales, but wasn’t sure how it would work. Everything went smoothly. It was nice to have someone to talk to about both professional and personal things such as balancing work and family. When a position opened up in my area that I was interested in applying for, I talked to Denise about it because I wasn’t sure if I should apply. Denise encouraged me to go for it and I got the job!” Samara F., Benefits, mentee of Denise G., Field Secretary

“Michael was able to show me how Home Office works with the field, how the field works and connected me to one of our chief sales officers. They helped give me a better understanding of how Health Savings Accounts fit in to our sales process and how the account managers sell them.” Jeremy S., Health Services Administration, mentee of Michael C., Agent Compensation

“It’s not just mentees who learn from the partnership. Vicki has a lot more institutional knowledge than me yet she’s in the program because she wants to learn, and I was able to learn from her.” Tim B., Law, mentor to Vicki H., Risk Management

“I handle claims, so I work with our Customers but I don’t usually get to see what happens at the beginning of a sale. Sarah taught me about that process and arranged for me to attend an account manager product training session.” LuAnn S., Life Operations, mentor to Sarah W., Field Training

“I was excited to be part of the program and learned how being a coach isn’t always the same as being a leader. The mentoring program helped me learn how to be a good coach.” Denise G., Field Secretary, mentor to Samara F.,

What’s Happening at AFA I Partnering with a Local Elementary School

April 15, 2013 02:18 AM

Students and ColleaguesOur tutoring program with Buchanan Elementary is one of my favorite community efforts that American Fidelity Colleagues are involved in. Buchanan has been AFA’s partner school since the 2006-2007 school year. We get the opportunity to tutor a student 30 minutes a week, and are able to choose the day and time that works best for our schedule.

Starting this week, the kids at Buchanan will be taking their annual standardized tests. I hope all of the hard work our Colleagues put in with these kids pays off on their tests! Good luck to both the teachers and the students.

We do more than tutor at Buchanan. For the past three years, AFA has held a school supply drive benefitting Buchanan. One year a few of our Information Systems Colleagues installed a smart board and this year we donated new playground equipment for the students. In the past we have been involved with incentives for top readers and we have many Colleagues who go read to classes. At the end of each year, we give a treat to our students for all of their hard work. Just last week, the AFA sponsored Thunder Rolling Book Bus made a stop at our school! Book FairI am thankful that AFA allows me time during my work day to make a difference in a child’s life and for all that our Company does for Buchanan and our local community. What are some ways you support the youth in your community? Let us know in the comments.

What's Happening at AFA I AFA Excels in Training and Development Programs

April 1, 2013 02:30 AM

AFA_188wAmerican Fidelity is known for our top notch training and development programs that we offer to Colleagues. We have been recognized onTrainingMagazine’s Top 125 list for nine consecutive years.

So, why does AFA take training and development so seriously? I sat down with our talent management team leader, David McLaughlin, to find out.

“With nearly 50 percent of our positions being filled internally, it’s imperative that we provide learning and career development opportunities to our Colleagues to keep the Company moving forward,” said David. “Our training programs are vital for our continuing success.”

AFA offers a variety of opportunities for our Colleagues to continue learning throughout their careers. One of the newer opportunities we are excited about is through our partnership with Oklahoma City Community College.   Our Degree at Work program allows Colleagues to finish their degree onsite and basic courses such as English and math are provided free to Colleagues. So far more than 40 Colleagues have taken advantage of the program.  Other classes within the program qualify for our tuition reimbursement program.

Check out this list of impressive stats that David gave me.

  • Our Colleagues average 9.42 hours of training a year.
  • We have paid tuition reimbursement to more than 140 Colleagues since the program began in 2004.
  • The AFA mentoring program was developed in 2005 and has had almost 200 participants.
  • To stay on top of the game, our field Colleagues participate in continuing education each year. In 2012 they completed a total of 14,184 hours!
