American Fidelity is dedicated to the health and wellness of our Colleagues and that’s why we offer opportunities for them to get up and move. Just last week the AF Wellness Team put on a wellness carnival, Spring into Wellness. More than 200 Colleagues joined us on our outdoor property at 9K for a quick, fun, healthy break in the afternoon. Colleagues participated in a scavenger hunt where they took a walk around our walking trail and played ping pong, musical chairs, basketball and catch. Some Colleagues took the relaxing route and painted a spring picture while sitting on the patio. Healthy snacks were also offered for Colleagues. Check out some pictures from the event. Our Colleagues enjoy participating in community wellness activities. And when those activities also have a charitable aspect, the appeal is even stronger!
This weekend, Colleagues will participate in two separate activities that promote both: The Redbud Classic and the Heart Walk.
Colleagues have been forming a team to support the Oklahoma City Heart Walk for several years. This year’s event is Saturday. Funds raised will help support the American Heart Association’s mission to raise awareness of the dangers of heart disease, to change behaviors that impact heart disease and to fund research for treatment options.
Each year, a grassroots team of Colleagues dedicated to the cause spearheads the efforts. A new T-shirt design is created and offered for sale with all proceeds going to the American Heart Association.
The event includes a 5K walk as well as activities to encourage kids to get up and get moving.
The Redbud Classic is a two-day event on Saturday and Sunday. It includes cycling, a 10K run, a 5K run, a wheelchair race and a kids’ fun run. The event culminates with the Redbud Bash.
In addition to promoting physical activity in a fun environment, proceeds from Redbud entry fees are donated to a different charity each year. This year’s recipient is Pepper’s Ranch, an organization dedicated to supporting short-term foster care solutions that strive to keep siblings together.

The move from our Home Office location at 2000 N. Classen to 9000 Cameron Parkway in Oklahoma City is nearing completion and with it comes some serious progress to the new workspace. Here’s a quick update on how some features of the new office are coming along.
- Construction of our new parking garage will finish this May, and as you can see, it’s already looking pretty good!
- New state-of-the-art conference rooms are being added to our third floor.
- The theater room is up and running, and has already proven to be a great place for Colleagues to congregate.
- Saints On Site, our on-site clinic operated by St. Anthony’s Medical Group, opens its doors to Colleagues this upcoming Monday.
- While our temporary café continues to dish out the goods, the new permanent café, partially designed by our own Colleagues, will be complete in July.
- Also coming in July is our brand new world-class fitness center. A temporary spot has been set aside for Colleagues in the meantime to help them Live Smart!
- Major changes have come to our front lobby, including this comfortable little spot!
In addition to these most excellent improvements, a few more floors are undergoing remodeling ensuring an attractive and modern workspace for the remaining Colleagues who have yet to make the move into their new offices.
Speaking of sleek and modern, our IT group has completed work on the innovative wireless network that allows us to work wirelessly anywhere in the building as well as outside on the patio. We’re excited about the coming years in our new building and even more excited to continue building the American Fidelity legacy in Oklahoma City.
ISD Colleagues celebrating a great year!
After a new year gets in full swing, American Fidelity takes time to celebrate our success from the prior year and thank our Colleagues for their hard work and dedication.
Just yesterday many of our teams started celebrating and others have plans in the coming weeks.
Our Life division Colleagues celebrated at Main Event with lunch and bowling and the Enterprise Business Services team will be venturing there in April for lunch, bowling, laser tag and more.
Our friends in IT took time out yesterday morning as one big team for breakfast and other treats.
The Financial Management Services team also enjoyed a come-and-go breakfast on their floor.
The Corporate and Human Resources teams are taking time out for lunch next week and Colleagues at our sister company, APL celebrated success with food, photo booths and goodie bags.
Colleagues in our Worksite division celebrated in the late afternoon with a Star Wars themed get together. They were encouraged to wear costumes, had snacks, music and more.
These are just a few ways American Fidelity celebrated 2015 success with our Colleagues. Would you like to join our team? Check out our OKC job openings and our field sales positions and learn about our hiring process.
Now that you’ve heard about our new brand and seen our new logo, we want to share what our teams are doing to live the new American Fidelity brand.
Late last year Brand Champions were selected to represent each team in our Company. In February all Colleagues attended brand training and since then our Brand Champions have been conducting follow-up workshops. The workshops are designed to help each team come up with three measurable objectives they would like to meet that will help make things simpler for our Customers. Below are updates from a few areas.
“In our workshops we discussed how we can better serve our special Customers by living the new brand with our daily job functions,” said Brand Champion Shawna Sparks.
Discussions during their workshops included cross-training, being supportive and providing helpful feedback to each other and understanding that the end goal is delighting our Customers with each interaction as representatives of AF.
The Colleagues on floor 7 are doing their part to remain focused on the Customer by holding five workshops, and one of these is being held on a Saturday to ensure phone coverage is not compromised.
“The team is excited for what the different opinion brand means for the future of AF,” said Brand Champions Emily Fasnacht and Kari Geissler.
The team is currently in the process of conducting their brand workshops and have scheduled four sessions to keep the groups small and friendly.
“We have a number of items already that I believe will make our processes cleaner and quicker, becoming a benefit to our Customers,” said Brand Champion Charlotte Blest.
Disability, Flex, Medical and Production Control
Brand workshops have been held for these groups and they are focused on the Customer’s changing needs.
“Making sure there is a centralized spot for everyone to gather the same data for a Customer is part of not only standardizing guidelines, but also to make sure Customers are getting consistent information,” said Brand Champion Melissa Duggan.
These are updates from just a few of our teams. We are excited to provide a different opinion for our Customers! If you’d like to join our team, check out our job openings and learn about our hiring process.
It’s not enough to just be a great place to work; our Colleagues also want to ensure our community is a great place to live!
As a result, American Fidelity Colleagues are among the leaders in the community in supporting the arts in the Oklahoma City area. Each spring, we come together to support Allied Arts, which reaches more than 1 million residents in our community and directly impacts the lives of our children, the growth of our economy and the health of our communities.
As a leader in our community, American Fidelity is one of the largest contributors to the Allied Arts annual fundraising campaign. We are also one of the trailblazers in establishing worksite-based campaigns for the Allied Arts member agencies and have been recognized as one of the best models to follow when new organizations want to join the campaign.
The annual campaign provides a way for Colleagues to support Allied Arts through payroll deductions as well as raise funds in other ways. We’ve hosted painting parties, penny wars, fundraising challenges and more. Executives offer to take a cream pie in the face, all to raise money for Allied Arts.
In the coming weeks, Colleagues will have the opportunity to learn more about Allied Arts member agencies during an open house in which agencies will send representatives to American Fidelity to talk about their work. Let us know how you support the arts in your community!

“Working for American Fidelity has made me a better person by allowing me to gain financial stability, pursue my degree at work and awaken the community action and volunteerism within me. I got married, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, went through chemo treatment and had a baby while employed at American Fidelity. With the necessary time off, cancer insurance, disability plan and the love of my Colleagues ... I was covered. I want to provide the same great Customer service to others as I received.”
“It's great to come to a work environment that you can assist Customers, have a group of Colleagues who you know you can trust and count on when you need assistance and be able to balance your family and work life.”

Kimberly B., Performance Management and Recruiting Specialist
At American Fidelity, we’ve worked hard to develop a culture of performance. That means we encourage an environment where Colleagues feel comfortable discussing their performance with their managers and vice versa. It also means we strive to do our best both in developing the skills needed for our jobs and in living our culture.
We’re also working to live our brand by making things simpler, both for our Colleagues and our Customers. One new way we’re working toward this goal is by changing our performance review process.
We’ve moved to a common date performance review process to simplify reviews. Everyone now has the same due date on their reviews. We’ve also streamlined the review itself by reducing it from up to 10 questions down to one question and two open comment areas! We are also implementing a six-month check-in review and encourage Colleagues to meet with their managers regularly to discuss their performance.
Our review process begins with a self-assessment that each Colleague completes to evaluate their own performance. This is where Colleagues can share their successes from the year, make suggestions for areas where they need to improve and develop growth plans.
We use a performance matrix to make it easy for both managers and Colleagues to see the potential increase based on their current salary and performance level. In addition, all Colleagues have access to the full list of salary grades available so that their potential salary range is transparent.
If you’re considering a position with us, what questions do you have about our performance management process? Let us know in the comments!
David M., Training Manager
We’re excited to announce that American Fidelity has made the Training Magazine Top 125 list for the twelfth consecutive year.
The list recognizes companies that provide excellent training and development programs for their Colleagues.
“With the way our world changes so quickly, none of us are guaranteed that our jobs will exist in the same way in five years. That’s one of the reasons that ongoing learning is so important,” said David McLaughlin, Training manager. “If you aren’t learning, you aren’t growing. We offer numerous opportunities for Colleagues to improve their skills so they are prepared for whatever comes their way. I’m proud of all of the Colleagues who work hard to make these programs a success and of all of the Colleagues who actively pursue learning opportunities.”
In 2015, American Fidelity Colleagues completed 43,444 hours of internal and external training for an average of 23.46 hours per Colleague.
Colleagues can meet with a career development specialist to discuss what specific training options they should take to pursue the next step in their careers. The succession planning and promote-from-within programs help Colleagues grow their careers with American Fidelity. Leadership development classes are available, along with a mentorship program. More than 100 Colleagues participated in the mentoring program in 2015. A Leadership Summit featuring an outside speaker takes place each fall and gives leaders a chance to focus on growing their leadership skills and learning about the strategic direction of the Company.
American Fidelity offers on-site and online training to all Colleagues, ranging from courses on project management to computer skills to managing stress. The Company provides several certification options, including Customer service, leadership, Lean and performance management.
Through an arrangement with Oklahoma City Community College, enrollment services, guidance counseling and classes are offered onsite. In addition, a tuition reimbursement program helps Colleagues finish their degrees, pursue master’s programs or earn professional certifications.
Training magazine's annual awards program recognizes employer-sponsored training and development. The judging is based on an extensive application process and includes many factors such as financial commitment, programs offered, metrics measured and methods of evaluation.

Last week American Fidelity Colleagues donated blood at our blood drive right here at the office. AF partners with the Oklahoma Blood Institute five times a year to allow our Colleagues to easily and quickly donate. We’ve been hosting blood drives with OBI for 32 years!
On blood drive days Colleagues who donate may wear AF T-shirts to work and are entered in drawings for various prizes.
At AF we are dedicated to our Colleagues, Customers and our community. We are proud to have a group of Colleagues who care and strive to do their best to help.
Help make a difference by donating to the local blood supply. Visit www.obi.org to learn more.
