March 23, 2016 03:00 AM

jobsearchnewspaper-1024x759 No matter the time or reason, searching for a new job can be an overwhelming scenario. With so many factors to consider and the stakes being so high, it’s no wonder many people find themselves wondering where to begin. Luckily, our recruiters have shared with us some very basic tips to help you get started on your job search!

  • Network through organizations that you may be affiliated with to provide job search leads. You should also expand your network to include schools/universities, friends, family and others.
  • Do some maintenance on your social media profiles so they are representative of a professional job search. Having an up-to-date, complete LinkedIn profile is also always recommended.
  • Review the top companies in your area as potential leads.
  • Make sure your resume is quick, concise, targeted and eye-catching to capture the attention of recruiters via digital technology.
  • Is your background and training highly specialized? Connecting with a third party search firm is a good option for those looking for work in a niche sector.

Ask a Recruiter: How to Talk Salary

March 10, 2016 01:30 AM

Alejandra W., Recruiting Specialist Alejandra W., Recruiting Specialist

Have you ever been in an interview and really wanted to ask the question about how much the job pays, but aren’t sure how to bring it up effectively?? For most people the amount a job pays could make or break the offer depending on their current financial situation.

Talking salary with a hiring manager can definitely feel awkward. It seems there’s never a right time or place.

Here are some tips to help you decide when and how to bring it up.

  • Make sure the employer is interested in you. Feel out the interviewer(s) and if you don’t feel like an offer could be considered, hold off on the salary question.
  • Consider your work history. If you’re new to the job market then it’s appropriate to hold back on salary question.
  • Understand that bringing up salary too soon can send the wrong message. Timing is important.
  • If they start trying to sell you on the job, then you should feel confident they are interested and you’re in the clear to ask about salary.
  • Consider your word choice when asking. Don’t just blurt out, “How much does it pay?”
  • Expect a vague answer and be prepared to answer what pay range you’re looking for.
  • Have a minimum number in mind and be prepared to negotiate to get there.

Do you have questions about the interview process, how to answer certain questions, or how to bring up other questions that you may have of the employer? Submit them here and watch for an answer from AF recruiters in the next Ask a Recruiter post.
