2016 at a Glance

January 7, 2016 02:00 AM

American Fidelity Values 2015 was a wonderful year for us here at American Fidelity, filled with friends, food and fun events. We’re already getting excited about all the cool things coming our way in 2016. Here’s a quick look at just a few of the happenings we’re most looking forward to in 2016.

  • Colleague Appreciation Week – Spring is a lovely time in Oklahoma, and we like to make it even better by celebrating our Colleagues with food, fun, prizes and more!
  • Customer Service Week – Held each October, Customer Service Week is a time for us to step back and reflect upon how important our Customers are to American Fidelity. Festivities abound during Customer Service Week.
  • Movie Night – Our Colleagues will be invited to bring the family along for outdoor movie screenings in the summer.
  • Food Trucks – While we have world-class eating establishments in our Home Office, we like to mix it up every once in a while by inviting food trucks to set up shop at American Fidelity.
  • Bring Your Kids to Work Day – Children enjoy a day of fun activities and games, lunch and spending time with their parents or grandparents learning about American Fidelity.
  • Service Awards  - Each December we recognize those dedicated Colleagues who have worked for our Company for many years.
  • AF Birthday – Birthdays are always a fun celebration, and American Fidelity’s is no exception! This year we’ll be celebrating 56 years of being in business.

American Fidelity’s Mobile Workforce

January 6, 2016 02:15 AM

InformationWeek We put a strong emphasis on being future oriented at American Fidelity and as such, we’re constantly looking for ways to improve our way of doing business. Part of this stance means embracing new technological advances that better serve our Customers and our Colleagues and one of the biggest initiatives in this direction is our Mobile Workforce. Mobile Workforce is a work from home program that gives AF Colleagues the flexibility to serve Customers both from home and different places throughout the workplace. Our Colleagues are no longer tied to just one desk and one phone! Telecommuting gives us the flexibility to deal with issues like inclement weather while giving our Colleagues’ work/life balance a major boost. “I love the reduction in my commute and gas bill, and it definitely improves the balancing act with home and work,” said Heather Webb, benefits adjuster. “I am able to spend the time I would be commuting with my husband and dogs or getting things done around the house.” Managers at American Fidelity are also reaping the benefits of a mobile workforce. “Mobile Workforce has been a win-win for both the Colleague and the Company,” says Gary Akers, vice president of benefits. “We have taken proactive steps to plan for inclement weather in advance by offering Colleagues the option of working from home on days when the Colleague is scheduled to work in the office and there is a potential for inclement weather. This allows the Colleague to work without traveling in hazardous road conditions, and it allows us to better serve our Customers.” Interested in working somewhere with a great sense of work/life balance? Colleagues Support Charity Donations

December 16, 2015 03:37 AM

Chari-Tee Art Only Our Colleagues are a generous group, and they support a wide range of organizations that help locally, nationally and around the globe. Each year, Colleagues are invited to nominate their favorite charities to receive charity donations for one month in the following year. The charities are selected by a random drawing, although the annual school supply drive to benefit our partner school always is one of the designated charity days. Another constant is our Colleague Relief Fund, which provides grants to Colleagues experiencing financial hardship due to natural disasters, medical issues or other calamities. Colleagues then pay $2 each to wear T-shirts on the designated day of the month with proceeds going to the selected charity. About 40 individual charities were nominated for 2016. Take a look at the charities that were selected to receive proceeds in 2016.

Celebrating the Holidays with our Partner School

December 9, 2015 05:22 AM

Buchanan Tutor and Student The Christmas season is special for children everywhere, and our American Fidelity Colleagues love to share the holiday with kids at our partner school, Buchanan Elementary! Each year, our tutors spend their last session before the holidays sharing a gift with the kids. This year, stockings for the students include candy, toys, a tree ornament and more. This week is the last week our tutors will spend with students before the winter break. This semester, about 30 Colleagues have spent 30 minutes each week working with students to help them improve their grades, complete their work and master skills. Whether it’s reading out loud, working on multiplication tables or quizzing the students on spelling words, our Colleagues are showing these students that we care about their success in school. In addition to tutoring students each week, American Fidelity is helping the school in other ways. Last month, Buchanan hosted a math, science and literacy evening for students and their parents. Our Company provided books for each pre-kindergarten and kindergarten student at the school. We’ve also helped the school pay for transportation so all students get to participate in a field trip during the school year. Our Company and our Colleagues are proud to be able to support educators and specifically partner with Buchanan Elementary School to do our part to ensure students at the school receive all the support they need to be successful in the classroom. &

AF Participates in United Way’s Day of Caring

October 7, 2015 03:41 AM

UWshirt-Tropical-Blue American Fidelity and our Colleagues have worked hard this year helping out the United Way of Central Oklahoma. Our dedication to our community and those in need is an integral part of our culture, and we’re always looking for opportunities to get involved! This past weekend, AF Colleagues lent a hand during the United Way’s Day of Caring, one of the country’s largest volunteer events, by spending time at the Oklahoma Foundation for the Disabled (OKFD). OKFD is a social services organization that provides high quality and activity-oriented adult day health services for adults with developmental disabilities in central Oklahoma. Their mission is to improve the quality of life of developmentally disabled adults by providing them with learning programs and services that include life skills training, recreational activities and socialization opportunities. “We made them happy! They made us happy! We all had fun!” said Tammy Townsend, marketing data base systems analyst and Day of Caring organizer. “They are such precious individuals and they can impact lives like no others.” “It was a very humbling experience. It makes me appreciate so much the people who work with the disabled every day. American Fidelity is a great Company because so many of our Colleagues really do care about people,“ added Clendon Rice VP of IT vendor asset management. Do you like volunteering? What charitable organizations do you think make a difference? Let us know in the comments.

Good Eats at AFA

September 23, 2015 03:00 AM

CafeDesigns As fall approaches, we’re inching closer and closer to fully transitioning into our new Home Office location in Oklahoma City. With the move comes modernized office space, the latest and greatest technology and a killer view of the city. While all these new comforts give us plenty to look forward to, I find myself most excited about the new on-site café manned by the good folks at Guckenheimer. As one of the premier food service management companies in the country, Guckenheimer’s goal is to create a customized dining experience befitting of AFA’s culture by offering healthy, hand-prepared meals for Colleagues to enjoy together. To help American Fidelity Colleagues in their goal to “Live Smart,” all menu items in our new café are conveniently labeled as either Green (healthiest choice), Yellow (healthy choice) or Red (least healthy choice). Healthier food items are discounted and the discounts are built into the menu pricing - Green items are 50 percent off, Yellow items are 30 percent off and Red items are “street price,” or what you would expect to pay at other restaurants. Delicious, healthy food served right in the office. When it comes to perks, it doesn’t get much better than that! Currently, Guckenheimer has set up a temporary café in our new Home Office while construction on a new permanent eatery is finished up. Our Colleagues will have quite a bit of input on the design of the new café, and I know many of us can’t wait to see it in person! In the meantime, I’ll just continue to enjoy the incredibly tasty breakfasts and lunches served passionately to us in our new home in OKC What on-site perks do you think are most important at a workplace? Colleagues Get Discounted Fair Tickets

August 24, 2015 02:54 AM

DSC_0702 If you’ve been following us on our blog or other social media channels then you’ve probably heard about the great opportunities our Colleagues have to purchase discounted tickets to the movies, theme parks and more right here at work. This time of year our favorite discount tickets are to the Oklahoma State Fair and the Disney On Ice show. Last week we started selling discounted admission tickets, ride coupons and Disney On Ice tickets to our Colleagues and they have another chance to get their tickets this week! “Going to the fair with family is fun, especially for an evening of fair food! It’s even better when the tickets are discounted and I can purchase them right here at work,” says Corporate Communications Colleague Leilani Fleenor. What’s your favorite part of the state fair? When Is It Time to Look for a New Job?

July 16, 2015 03:30 AM

jobsearchnewspaper-300x222 Are you filled with dread on Sunday evenings? Do you find yourself hitting the “snooze” button one too many times every morning? Are there a million other things you’d rather do than go to work? The Harvard Business Review recently published an excellent article detailing the five signs it’s time for a new job. I highly recommend reading the whole article as it shares some great statistics about job satisfaction and goes into some pretty interesting details about what makes people feel fulfilled in their work. In the meantime, here’s a quick breakdown of the signs that should tell you when it’s time to look for a new job.

  • You are not learning /You underperform - If you’re not challenging yourself then you are not growing in your career. Make sure you’re performing at your highest level or else your resume and job skills will suffer.
  • You are undervalued - No matter what perks your job offers, it’s hard to feel at home with a company if they don’t value you and your capabilities.
  • You’re in it only for the money - Being well compensated is certainly an important factor of any career, but if it’s the only thing keeping you at a job, it might be time to reevaluate your position.
  • You can’t stand your boss - “As the saying goes, people join companies but they quit their bosses.” Great leadership is an invaluable part of any organization; make sure you are working with someone who’s empowering you and your career.

Does any of this sound familiar? Are you ready to start a new career? Time and time again, American Fidelity has proven itself to be a great place to work. From one-of-a-kind career development and training opportunities to incredible compensation and benefits, American Fidelity is a wonderful place start a life-long career.
