Disability Insurance Awareness Month Is Happening Now!

May is Disability Insurance Awareness month, a time designated for us to reflect upon the important role Disability Insurance plays for our Customers, Colleagues and Company.

Did you know that according to the Council for Disability Awareness, more than 25 percent of American workers will at some point miss three months or more of work due to an injury or disability? Did you also know that more than three fourths of workers claim they could not pay their bills for more than a year without income?

Statistics like these can be alarming but are a good reminder about the importance disability insurance plays in protecting your income.

American Fidelity’s founders, C.W. and C.B. Cameron based our Company on a fundamental belief: The most important asset anyone has is their ability to work and earn a living. As part of this belief, our Colleagues automatically receive disability insurance as part of our standard benefits package.

If your paycheck suddenly vanished due to an illness or injury that prevented you from working, how long would you be able to buy groceries or pay your monthly bills before feeling the pinch? Closer to Home

9k The move from our Home Office location at 2000 N. Classen to 9000 Cameron Parkway in Oklahoma City is nearing completion and with it comes some serious progress to the new workspace. Here’s a quick update on how some features of the new office are coming along.IMG_2286

  • Construction of our new parking garage will finish this May, and as you can see, it’s already looking pretty good!
  • New state-of-the-art conference rooms are being added to our third floor.


  • The theater room is up and running, and has already proven to be a great place for Colleagues to congregate.
  • Saints On Site, our on-site clinic operated by St. Anthony’s Medical Group, opens its doors to Colleagues this upcoming Monday.
  • While our temporary café continues to dish out the goods, the new permanent café, partially designed by our own Colleagues, will be complete in July.
  • Also coming in July is our brand new world-class fitness center. A temporary spot has been set aside for Colleagues in the meantime to help them Live Smart!


  • Major changes have come to our front lobby, including this comfortable little spot!

In addition to these most excellent improvements, a few more floors are undergoing remodeling ensuring an attractive and modern workspace for the remaining Colleagues who have yet to make the move into their new offices.

Speaking of sleek and modern, our IT group has completed work on the innovative wireless network that allows us to work wirelessly anywhere in the building as well as outside on the patio. We’re excited about the coming years in our new building and even more excited to continue building the American Fidelity legacy in Oklahoma City.

AF Celebrates Success!

After a new year gets in full swing, American Fidelity takes time to celebrate our success from the prior year and thank our Colleagues for their hard work and dedication.

Just yesterday many of our teams started celebrating and others have plans in the coming weeks.

Our Life division Colleagues celebrated at Main Event with lunch and bowling and the Enterprise Business Services team will be venturing there in April for lunch, bowling, laser tag and more.

Our friends in IT took time out yesterday morning as one big team for breakfast and other treats.

The Financial Management Services team also enjoyed a come-and-go breakfast on their floor.

The Corporate and Human Resources teams are taking time out for lunch next week and Colleagues at our sister company, APL celebrated success with food, photo booths and goodie bags.

Colleagues in our Worksite division celebrated in the late afternoon with a Star Wars themed get together. They were encouraged to wear costumes, had snacks, music and more.

Referrals are one of our favorite ways to find great new Colleagues at American Fidelity, and we’re always wanting to get people excited about referring their friends and family to join our team. Performance Management at American Fidelity

At American Fidelity, we’ve worked hard to develop a culture of performance. That means we encourage an environment where Colleagues feel comfortable discussing their performance with their managers and vice versa. It also means we strive to do our best both in developing the skills needed for our jobs and in living our culture.

We’re also working to live our brand by making things simpler, both for our Colleagues and our Customers. One new way we’re working toward this goal is by changing our performance review process.

We’ve moved to a common date performance review process to simplify reviews. Everyone now has the same due date on their reviews. We’ve also streamlined the review itself by reducing it from up to 10 questions down to one question and two open comment areas! We are also implementing a six-month check-in review and encourage Colleagues to meet with their managers regularly to discuss their performance.

Our review process begins with a self-assessment that each Colleague completes to evaluate their own performance. This is where Colleagues can share their successes from the year, make suggestions for areas where they need to improve and develop growth plans.

We use a performance matrix to make it easy for both managers and Colleagues to see the potential increase based on their current salary and performance level. In addition, all Colleagues have access to the full list of salary grades available so that their potential salary range is transparent.

American Fidelity Makes Training Top 125 for 12th Consecutive Year

We’re excited to announce that American Fidelity has made the Training Magazine Top 125 list for the twelfth consecutive year.

The list recognizes companies that provide excellent training and development programs for their Colleagues.

“With the way our world changes so quickly, none of us are guaranteed that our jobs will exist in the same way in five years. That’s one of the reasons that ongoing learning is so important,” said David McLaughlin, Training manager. “If you aren’t learning, you aren’t growing. We offer numerous opportunities for Colleagues to improve their skills so they are prepared for whatever comes their way. I’m proud of all of the Colleagues who work hard to make these programs a success and of all of the Colleagues who actively pursue learning opportunities.”

In 2015, American Fidelity Colleagues completed 43,444 hours of internal and external training for an average of 23.46 hours per Colleague.

Colleagues can meet with a career development specialist to discuss what specific training options they should take to pursue the next step in their careers. The succession planning and promote-from-within programs help Colleagues grow their careers with American Fidelity. Leadership development classes are available, along with a mentorship program. More than 100 Colleagues participated in the mentoring program in 2015. A Leadership Summit featuring an outside speaker takes place each fall and gives leaders a chance to focus on growing their leadership skills and learning about the strategic direction of the Company.

American Fidelity offers on-site and online training to all Colleagues, ranging from courses on project management to computer skills to managing stress. The Company provides several certification options, including Customer service, leadership, Lean and performance management.

Through an arrangement with Oklahoma City Community College, enrollment services, guidance counseling and classes are offered onsite. In addition, a tuition reimbursement program helps Colleagues finish their degrees, pursue master’s programs or earn professional certifications.

Training magazine's annual awards program recognizes employer-sponsored training and development. The judging is based on an extensive application process and includes many factors such as financial commitment, programs offered, metrics measured and methods of evaluation.
