American Fidelity in the Community

American Fidelity in the Community

American Fidelity doesn’t just value educators as our Customers; we also support their efforts in the classroom through a variety of sponsorships geared toward rewarding teachers and helping them engage their students.

Last week, I had an opportunity to see three of our programs in action.

The Rolling Thunder Book Bus came to a stop at Oklahoma City’s Sequoyah Elementary School. Players Cameron Payne and Semaj Christon helped students pick out a book that they will get to keep and read. The kids had a great time and got to take a group photo with the players after picking out their books.

The Rolling Thunder is one of the team’s several literacy initiatives sponsored by American Fidelity. Since its debut in 2009, the bus has visited nearly 1,600 schools and day care programs distributing more than 126,000 books to children.

Other Read to Achieve programs American Fidelity sponsors with the Thunder include the Teacher of the Game, Reading Time Outs and Thunder Reading Challenge.

On Friday, I was able to hang out with KFOR meteorologist Aaron Brackett at Steed Elementary in Midwest City while he presented Weatherschool, a program designed to teach elementary students about the weather. In addition to the live in-school programs, Weatherschool offers online curriculum teachers can use in their science classes.

This week, Magic 104 radio recognized our first Teacher Feature winner of the school year. On Monday, radio personality Jeff “Magic Man” Roberts went to Crooked Oak High School to thank history teacher Jason Smith for sharing his love of learning with students.

When I see these programs in action, I’m proud to work for a Company that supports educators, not only by specializing in helping them provide for their financial future, but also by recognizing and honoring their roles in the lives of our children.

What makes you proud to work for your company?

Making a Difference: Colleagues Tutor at Buchanan

September 14, 2016 09:58 AM

TutorsTodd L. and Megan V.

One of the highlights of my week is every Thursday morning when I get to head over to Buchanan Elementary School and spend 30 minutes helping a fourth-grader with his classwork.

I’m one of about 30 Colleagues who goes to the school each week to tutor and mentor a student. I love that American Fidelity gives me the time away from the office to make a difference in this child’s life.

This is my second year tutoring this student, and I hope to be able to work with him for the rest of his time at Buchanan.

While I do believe I help him better understand reading, math and social studies, my biggest impact on his life probably isn’t seen in the gradebook. This child now gets one-on-one attention each week from an adult who values his education. As a child whose mother works until 11 p.m. each night, he doesn’t often get help with his homework. But I’m there every week to help in areas he’s struggling, and to let him know that his success is important to me.

We don’t always talk only about school. I know he’s grounded for throwing a baseball through the window, and that he’s looking forward to spending time with his uncle and grandmother later this year. For 30 minutes each week, I can specialize in helping this child feel like what he does matters to other people.

That, more than the work we do in the books, will stick with him as he moves out of Buchanan and through the rest of his life.

What are you doing to make a difference in your community?

AF United CAMPaign

August 4, 2016 02:44 PM

American Fidelity’s United Way campaign kicked off on Monday this week, and our Colleagues are busy finding ways to donate!

Throughout the campaign Colleagues have the opportunity to tour various United Way organizations and learn from some of the organizations at our on-site Agency Fair.

AF United Way ambassadors are already busy informing their teams of different activities being held to help raise money for the campaign.

The campaign lasts through Aug. 12 and our goal is to donate $525,000 as a Company. AF’s campaign helps support the community-wide efforts for the United Way of Central Oklahoma.

Colleagues Donate School Supplies

 School Supply Art

Who doesn’t remember the smell of opening a fresh box of crayons, sharpening new pencils or choosing folders with cute puppies or favored superheroes?

Our Colleagues are helping bring some of those memories to life for children at our partner school, Buchanan Elementary. This week, we’re sponsoring a school supply drive to ensure our students have what they need to learn when school resumes Monday.

Bins are filling with reams of wide-ruled paper, boxes of no. 2 pencils and cartons of tissues. Monetary donations also are rolling in.

Most of the students at Buchanan qualify for the free and reduced lunch program, and their families cannot afford to provide the supplies the children need. So Colleagues are filling the gap.

The supply drive is one of our monthly charity day activities in which Colleagues donate at least $2 per month for the privilege of wearing Company T-shirts each Friday. For this drive, many Colleagues go far beyond the $2 per person to help ensure the students have what they need to make learning fun.

How do you support back to school efforts in your community?

Colleagues Smash Giving Goals

May 19, 2016 07:17 AM

Colleagues participated in a food and fund drive for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and obliterated our goal of collecting $7,500 by giving nearly $12,000 and more than 1,300 individual items of food during the week-long campaign!

In addition to giving money and food, about a dozen Colleagues and family members also donated time last Saturday to help with the letter carriers’ food drive.

Our team was joined by other volunteers and helped unload and sort nearly 20,000 pounds of food collected by letter carriers from the Edmond Main Post Office.

Colleagues Support ‘Run to Remember’

April 27, 2016 02:09 PM

On Sunday, thousands of running enthusiasts converged in Oklahoma City to participate in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, and American Fidelity Colleagues turned out in force to both participate and support the event.

For the 16th year – since the marathon’s inception – American Fidelity hosted a water stop at our buildings on Classen Boulevard to help hydrate and motivate runners in the full marathon, half marathon and marathon relay events. Of the nearly 25,000 participants who traveled down Classen on Sunday, several of them were our Colleagues.

About 50 Colleagues, family members and friends worked at the water stop, which is located about mile 23 of the full marathon, or mile 10 of the half marathon course. Volunteers were on-site from 6 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to support the runners. The event is known as a “people’s marathon” because it welcomes racers of all skill levels to compete while also serving as a qualifier for the Boston marathon.

AF volunteer organizer Lisa Burchfield thanked Colleagues for giving up their time on a Sunday to support the racers and the “Run to Remember.”

“You made everything look easy,” Lisa wrote in an email to volunteers. “I know that’s because of your dedication to serving the runners and our community as we took time out to remember those lost and wounded in the federal building bombing as well as honor those who worked tirelessly searching through the rubble.”

Volunteers were proud to be part of the event.

“Thank you for the opportunity to volunteer! I had a wonderful time and look forward to helping in the future,” one volunteer said.

Another wrote, “I enjoyed (the opportunity to volunteer) and hope to be able to do more as the year goes by.”

The Memorial Marathon water stop is just one way American Fidelity supports our community. Learn more about other AF volunteer efforts.

Wellness Events Also Give Back

April 6, 2016 05:18 AM

HeartWalk16 Our Colleagues enjoy participating in community wellness activities. And when those activities also have a charitable aspect, the appeal is even stronger!

This weekend, Colleagues will participate in two separate activities that promote both: The Redbud Classic and the Heart Walk.

Colleagues have been forming a team to support the Oklahoma City Heart Walk for several years. This year’s event is Saturday. Funds raised will help support the American Heart Association’s mission to raise awareness of the dangers of heart disease, to change behaviors that impact heart disease and to fund research for treatment options.

Each year, a grassroots team of Colleagues dedicated to the cause spearheads the efforts. A new T-shirt design is created and offered for sale with all proceeds going to the American Heart Association.

The event includes a 5K walk as well as activities to encourage kids to get up and get moving.

The Redbud Classic is a two-day event on Saturday and Sunday. It includes cycling, a 10K run, a 5K run, a wheelchair race and a kids’ fun run. The event culminates with the Redbud Bash.

In addition to promoting physical activity in a fun environment, proceeds from Redbud entry fees are donated to a different charity each year. This year’s recipient is Pepper’s Ranch, an organization dedicated to supporting short-term foster care solutions that strive to keep siblings together.

Colleagues Go Bald for Childhood Cancer Research 2016

April 4, 2016 07:47 AM

St_Baldricks_Before Today, nine American Fidelity Colleagues are showing off their newly shaved heads after helping the St. Baldrick’s Foundation raise money and awareness for childhood cancer research.

Colleagues have participated in the event for the last several years. This year, the team features nine Colleagues, mostly from the Information Systems Division, who joined the Brethren of Bald team. Together, they’ve raised more than $7,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

The team members allowed their heads to be shaved on Sunday after collecting donations from fellow Colleagues, family members and friends. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation has funded more than $178 million in research grants in an effort to find treatments and cures for different types of childhood cancer.

According to the organization, more than 175,000 children are diagnosed with some form of cancer every year, and more children die from the disease than all other diseases combined.

The Oklahoma City shaving event is one of hundreds planned nationwide in 2016. Colleague Aaron Stockton served as this year’s Brethren of Bald team captain. He has been shaving his head for the cause for several years. This year’s lone female team member is Brooke Boevers, who is a team leader in our benefits department. Other team members are Steve Gaither, Brian Whitley, John Spaid, Joseph Peters, Anthony Andrews, Lou Harmon and George Nelson. St_Baldricks_After “The event is to help raise awareness and money for underfunded children’s cancer research,” Aaron said. “These grants also help researchers find less invasive and more successful treatments against childhood cancer.”

In addition to taking donations, the team also sold a Brethren of Bald T-shirt, with proceeds going to the cause.

Would you shave your head to help raise money and awareness for childhood cancer research?

Colleagues Support Charity Donations

December 16, 2015 03:37 AM

Chari-Tee Art Only Our Colleagues are a generous group, and they support a wide range of organizations that help locally, nationally and around the globe. Each year, Colleagues are invited to nominate their favorite charities to receive charity donations for one month in the following year. The charities are selected by a random drawing, although the annual school supply drive to benefit our partner school always is one of the designated charity days. Another constant is our Colleague Relief Fund, which provides grants to Colleagues experiencing financial hardship due to natural disasters, medical issues or other calamities. Colleagues then pay $2 each to wear T-shirts on the designated day of the month with proceeds going to the selected charity. About 40 individual charities were nominated for 2016. Take a look at the charities that were selected to receive proceeds in 2016.

Celebrating the Holidays with our Partner School

December 9, 2015 05:22 AM

Buchanan Tutor and Student The Christmas season is special for children everywhere, and our American Fidelity Colleagues love to share the holiday with kids at our partner school, Buchanan Elementary! Each year, our tutors spend their last session before the holidays sharing a gift with the kids. This year, stockings for the students include candy, toys, a tree ornament and more. This week is the last week our tutors will spend with students before the winter break. This semester, about 30 Colleagues have spent 30 minutes each week working with students to help them improve their grades, complete their work and master skills. Whether it’s reading out loud, working on multiplication tables or quizzing the students on spelling words, our Colleagues are showing these students that we care about their success in school. In addition to tutoring students each week, American Fidelity is helping the school in other ways. Last month, Buchanan hosted a math, science and literacy evening for students and their parents. Our Company provided books for each pre-kindergarten and kindergarten student at the school. We’ve also helped the school pay for transportation so all students get to participate in a field trip during the school year. Our Company and our Colleagues are proud to be able to support educators and specifically partner with Buchanan Elementary School to do our part to ensure students at the school receive all the support they need to be successful in the classroom. &
