AF Supports Community and Wellness and Celebrates Service

December 16, 2016 10:51 AM

On Wednesday about 50 American Fidelity Colleagues participated in the Jingle Jog. AF Colleagues donated more than 800 pounds of food to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and supported their wellness!

Yesterday we celebrated the dedicated service of our Colleagues who met a milestone year of service with American Fidelity this year at our annual Service Awards event.

Colleague Appreciation Week Taco LineTaco Tuesday Line

During one week each year, American Fidelity takes time out to shower appreciation on our Colleagues. While we appreciate their contributions every week of the year, Colleague Appreciation Week is celebrated to ensure our Colleagues know we understand their contributions to the success of serving our Customers every day.

The week kicked off with Munchies Monday and a packet of snack crackers delivered to every Colleague. We celebrated Taco Tuesday with free lunch from the Waterfront Grill.Taco!Colleagues registered to win prizes on Wednesday by showing off their oldest (or favorite) AF attire. We got some great photos from the 1980s that took us down memory lane!

We celebrated our Company’s 56th birthday on Thursday and also took time to give back to the community for Thankful Thursday. Colleagues were treated to cupcakes and entered to win one of 56 prizes. They also brought donations for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and our 2017 Charity Day schedule was announced.

The week culminated on Fun Friday with Fun Dip delivered to each break room.

Our full-time work from home and remote Colleagues weren’t forgotten; they each were mailed a box including items from the week and were eligible for all the prizes that were distributed.

We know that Colleagues who feel appreciated work harder for our Customers. If you want to work for a company that appreciates its Colleagues, check our openings today!

Connecting with Our Colleagues

One of my favorite things about working for American Fidelity is the transparency of our leadership team. Twice a year, Colleagues are invited to attend town hall meetings, called Colleague Connection, to hear from our leaders and other Colleagues who are heading up large projects.

Last week we hosted four identical sessions of Colleague Connection to allow more than 500 Colleagues to attend live. One session was recorded and will be available on our Intranet for Colleagues who weren’t able to attend live.

In addition to Company President Dave Carpenter, other presenters included Colleagues who are leading some of the major initiatives throughout our Company.

We heard and update about how our Company is performing financially, including current status and year-end projections. We learned more about a tech project to improve collaboration and share resources and best practices among our various companies that share ownership. We heard a story about how one support division is living our brand to help divisions throughout the Company make processes simpler for our Customer.

Information about our initiative to collect data and improve accuracy for our Customers was shared, along with updates on our progress in implementing our policy administration system.

Dave wrapped up the meetings with quick updates on a variety of smaller projects, including our on-site grill, moving Colleagues out of the previous building, some pending acquisitions and more.

At the end of each meeting, Colleagues had the opportunity to ask questions about topics that were covered, or other questions they may have. Questions and responses from all four sessions will be compiled and will be available along with the video.

The meetings are a great way to ensure Colleagues stay informed about what going on in our Company so we can find ways to support the major efforts toward improvement.

High 5! Celebrating Customer Service

This week I had the privilege of helping to recognize about two dozen of our Colleagues who have been recognized by their peers for providing excellent Customer service. The whole Company celebrated Customer Service Week, and these Colleagues represent the best of the best.

We invited the top achievers to lunch with Company President Dave Carpenter, and he thanked the group for their efforts on behalf of American Fidelity. Dave encouraged the Colleagues to continue their dedication to service.

The celebration also marked the end of the first year of our revamped Colleague recognition program: High 5!

Colleagues can nominate each other for a kudo if they appreciate a one-time action, or they can nominate fellow Colleagues for a 5 AF Recognition for consistently demonstrating our core values and living our brand. Since its debut, more than 800 nominations have been received to recognize 425 individual Colleagues.

This week, we honored the Colleagues who received the most acclaim during the past year. Lorrie Gates and Ginger Rice were the Gold Star achievers, and each received more than 10 nominations.

We also saluted Silver Star achievers, and presented honorable mention awards to Colleagues representing departments throughout the Company.

What types of recognition do you receive, and what types of recognition are most meaningful to you?

American Fidelity in the Community

American Fidelity in the Community

American Fidelity doesn’t just value educators as our Customers; we also support their efforts in the classroom through a variety of sponsorships geared toward rewarding teachers and helping them engage their students.

Last week, I had an opportunity to see three of our programs in action.

The Rolling Thunder Book Bus came to a stop at Oklahoma City’s Sequoyah Elementary School. Players Cameron Payne and Semaj Christon helped students pick out a book that they will get to keep and read. The kids had a great time and got to take a group photo with the players after picking out their books.

The Rolling Thunder is one of the team’s several literacy initiatives sponsored by American Fidelity. Since its debut in 2009, the bus has visited nearly 1,600 schools and day care programs distributing more than 126,000 books to children.

Other Read to Achieve programs American Fidelity sponsors with the Thunder include the Teacher of the Game, Reading Time Outs and Thunder Reading Challenge.

On Friday, I was able to hang out with KFOR meteorologist Aaron Brackett at Steed Elementary in Midwest City while he presented Weatherschool, a program designed to teach elementary students about the weather. In addition to the live in-school programs, Weatherschool offers online curriculum teachers can use in their science classes.

This week, Magic 104 radio recognized our first Teacher Feature winner of the school year. On Monday, radio personality Jeff “Magic Man” Roberts went to Crooked Oak High School to thank history teacher Jason Smith for sharing his love of learning with students.

When I see these programs in action, I’m proud to work for a Company that supports educators, not only by specializing in helping them provide for their financial future, but also by recognizing and honoring their roles in the lives of our children.

What makes you proud to work for your company?

Making a Difference: Colleagues Tutor at Buchanan

September 14, 2016 09:58 AM

TutorsTodd L. and Megan V.

One of the highlights of my week is every Thursday morning when I get to head over to Buchanan Elementary School and spend 30 minutes helping a fourth-grader with his classwork.

I’m one of about 30 Colleagues who goes to the school each week to tutor and mentor a student. I love that American Fidelity gives me the time away from the office to make a difference in this child’s life.

This is my second year tutoring this student, and I hope to be able to work with him for the rest of his time at Buchanan.

While I do believe I help him better understand reading, math and social studies, my biggest impact on his life probably isn’t seen in the gradebook. This child now gets one-on-one attention each week from an adult who values his education. As a child whose mother works until 11 p.m. each night, he doesn’t often get help with his homework. But I’m there every week to help in areas he’s struggling, and to let him know that his success is important to me.

We don’t always talk only about school. I know he’s grounded for throwing a baseball through the window, and that he’s looking forward to spending time with his uncle and grandmother later this year. For 30 minutes each week, I can specialize in helping this child feel like what he does matters to other people.

That, more than the work we do in the books, will stick with him as he moves out of Buchanan and through the rest of his life.

What are you doing to make a difference in your community?
