AF Develops Leadership

May 27, 2016 03:42 PM

American Fidelity is committed to our Colleagues and making sure they have the best opportunities to be successful. That’s why we offer a variety of training and development opportunities at all levels.

Recently we announced a new leadership program, Lead U. Lead U is designed to focus specifically on better preparing leaders to drive AF Colleagues to success. This program is for our Colleagues who are currently in leadership roles.

Participants will be required to complete a set number of training hours in a 12-month period. There will be four learning tracks within Lead U to drill down further and focus on the specific type of leadership a Colleague is in.

Training our Colleagues to be better versions of themselves is a win for our Colleagues, a win for our Company and a win for our Customers.

We’re excited to announce that American Fidelity has made the Training Magazine Top 125 list for the twelfth consecutive year.

The list recognizes companies that provide excellent training and development programs for their Colleagues.

“With the way our world changes so quickly, none of us are guaranteed that our jobs will exist in the same way in five years. That’s one of the reasons that ongoing learning is so important,” said David McLaughlin, Training manager. “If you aren’t learning, you aren’t growing. We offer numerous opportunities for Colleagues to improve their skills so they are prepared for whatever comes their way. I’m proud of all of the Colleagues who work hard to make these programs a success and of all of the Colleagues who actively pursue learning opportunities.”

In 2015, American Fidelity Colleagues completed 43,444 hours of internal and external training for an average of 23.46 hours per Colleague.

Colleagues can meet with a career development specialist to discuss what specific training options they should take to pursue the next step in their careers. The succession planning and promote-from-within programs help Colleagues grow their careers with American Fidelity. Leadership development classes are available, along with a mentorship program. More than 100 Colleagues participated in the mentoring program in 2015. A Leadership Summit featuring an outside speaker takes place each fall and gives leaders a chance to focus on growing their leadership skills and learning about the strategic direction of the Company.

American Fidelity offers on-site and online training to all Colleagues, ranging from courses on project management to computer skills to managing stress. The Company provides several certification options, including Customer service, leadership, Lean and performance management.

Through an arrangement with Oklahoma City Community College, enrollment services, guidance counseling and classes are offered onsite. In addition, a tuition reimbursement program helps Colleagues finish their degrees, pursue master’s programs or earn professional certifications.

Training magazine's annual awards program recognizes employer-sponsored training and development. The judging is based on an extensive application process and includes many factors such as financial commitment, programs offered, metrics measured and methods of evaluation.

Tuition Reimbursement at American Fidelity

January 27, 2016 02:15 AM

One of the most important and generous benefits a Company can offer is tuition reimbursement. American Fidelity recently updated our Tuition Reimbursement program to provide more benefits to Colleagues and help them improve their skills to better meet our Customers’ needs.

  1. Colleagues receive benefits after working at American Fidelity for one year.
  2. We raised the annual reimbursement for both full- and part-time Colleagues.
  3. Reimbursements will occur monthly instead of quarterly so that Colleagues are reimbursed faster.

AF Leaders Sharpen Skills

August 10, 2015 02:45 AM

Leadership_Summit_2015_logo American Fidelity takes a vested interest in our Colleagues and their professional development, including our leaders. The Company understands the importance of developing our leaders to be better tomorrow than they are today, for our Customers, our Colleagues and our Company. Just last week American Fidelity’s leaders came together for a full day of leadership training at AF’s Leadership Summit 2015. Leadership Summit is a day for our leaders to Learn; Collaborate; and Lead, the AF Way. The Name Tag Guy, Scott Ginsberg, talked to our leaders about approachability and the idea that if people can’t come up to you, they’ll never get behind you. Following the keynote, AF leaders attended three different breakout sessions that were specific to leadership and American Fidelity. “Self-development is a key to the success of our leaders, but it's often hard to find time to do it. Leadership Summit is one day where our leaders Learn new skills and Collaborate with their peers in order to Lead the AF Way. It rejuvenates them and engages them to take what they learn back to their day-to-day leadership mentality. It's also a day of fun for all attendees,” says Heather Henshall, leadership and management training specialist. Read more about career development at American Fidelity. Tuition Reimbursement Program Surpasses $1M Mark

April 22, 2015 04:00 AM
0913 We’ve talked a lot about how our Company places an emphasis on ensuring that our Colleagues have the skills they need to serve our Customers and grow in their careers. That assertion is not just lip-service; in addition to the hundreds of classes offered on-site each year by our nationally recognized training department, American Fidelity also has reimbursed Colleagues for more than $1 million in tuition costs since the program began in 2004. Nearly 200 Colleagues already have benefited from the program, and many more are enrolled in classes now and will continue to receive reimbursements to help them improve their skills and earn their degrees. Our Colleagues say they may have never finished their degrees without the program, or it would have taken so much longer. Here are some comments from them.
  • The tuition reimbursement program allowed me to finish my degree on my timeframe without going into debt to do it. Without the program, I would probably still be wishing I had my degree; now I have a beautiful diploma on my wall! – Tracy Bain, technical infrastructure analyst
  • The AFA tuition reimbursement program has helped me tremendously. It has helped pay for my tuition, which is something I couldn’t afford on my own. Going back to school has allowed me to work on my career goals and to also give myself a sense of accomplishment. – Krista Thompson, Customer service representative
  • The tuition reimbursement program was the final push I needed to go back to school. I am so grateful to AFA for investing in me and making it possible for me to continue my formal education. My college courses helped me hone my communication, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. A liberal education prepares us for dealing with diversity, change and complexity. – Paula Liotine, process improvement team leader
In addition to tuition reimbursement, American Fidelity makes it easier to take classes by offering them on-site! We partner with Oklahoma City Community College for the Degree at Work program. We are so proud of the Colleagues who have worked hard to improve their skills! How do you make sure to continue your education throughout a career?

American Fidelity Mentoring Program

April 16, 2015 04:39 AM
It seems like for the past decade we’ve heard about the coming retirement of Baby Boomers and the takeover of the workforce by Millennials. At American Fidelity, we’ve seen this trend happening the last several years and our current population is about a third each of Millennials, Gen Xers and Baby Boomers, with some Traditionalists continuing to serve our Customers as well. We wanted to ensure we capture the knowledge and experience our Traditionalist and Baby Boomer Colleagues have before they head off to enjoy retirement, so 10 years ago we began the American Fidelity Mentoring Program (AMP). AMP is a formal mentoring program designed “to develop AFA’s future, one Colleague at a time.” AMP is open to all Colleagues seeking a development opportunity through informal learning and knowledge sharing. Mentors play an important role in Colleagues learning more about AFA outside of their own area, developing leadership skills and being prepared for succession planning opportunities. 10year_infographic Our mentorship pairs meet at least every other week for six months during the official program, but many continue to meet after the program as well and turn to each other to solve problems. Having someone to go to outside of your department can offer a fresh perspective on issues. Have you ever participated in a mentorship program? What do you look for in a mentor or mentee?

Fraud Training at AFA

April 8, 2015 04:54 AM
InformationWeek We've talked a lot lately about the training offered to Colleagues at American Fidelity. Development opportunities like our Customer Service Certification program and product training are great ways to empower our Colleagues and help ensure our Customers are being served to our maximum abilities. As an insurance company, one of the most vital forms of training and education we offer Colleagues is on fraud protection. Our Customers’ safety and security is of the utmost importance, and our Colleagues are the front line of protection. We offer our Colleagues consistent fraud and security training opportunities to make sure they are up-to-date on the latest fraud information. Courses like “Security 101” provide participants an increased awareness of the current information security environment and how it affects American Fidelity’s daily business functions. Colleagues learn AFA's information security concepts and the role each of us play in preventing security attacks and how to protect the Company and their home computer from attack. “Fraud 101” focuses on actual cases of insurance fraud and helps our Colleagues identify security risks by watching for red flags and instructs them on how to report concerns and prevent them from happening. In addition to our fraud classes, AFA also distributes the quarterly Fighting Fraud newsletter that provides important information on not only how to guard against fraud for our Customers, but for their personal lives as well. We not only continually educate our Colleagues on fraud and ways to protect against it, our Internal Audit Colleagues are dedicated each day to making sure Customer information is handled properly. Tell us why and how you think training is important to the workplace in the comments section. We want to hear from you!
