5 Tips to Help Your Job Search

With so many factors to consider and the stakes being so high, it’s no wonder many people find themselves wondering where to begin. Luckily, our recruiters have shared with us some very basic tips to help you get started on your job search!

  • Network through organizations that you may be affiliated with to provide job search leads. You should also expand your network to include schools/universities, friends, family and others.
  • Do some maintenance on your social media profiles so they are representative of a professional job search. Having an up-to-date, complete LinkedIn profile is also always recommended.
  • Review the top companies in your area as potential leads.
  • Make sure your resume is quick, concise, targeted and eye-catching to capture the attention of recruiters via digital technology.
  • Is your background and training highly specialized? Connecting with a third party search firm is a good option for those looking for work in a niche sector.

Mentoring Program Helps Develop Colleagues

The American Fidelity Mentoring Program is a formal program designed “to develop AF’s future, one Colleague at a time.” It is open to all Colleagues seeking a development opportunity through informal learning and knowledge sharing.

In 2015, 104 Colleagues participated in the mentoring program and we’ve just kicked off the program for 2016. Last year was the first year we tried a new “online dating” style of matching mentees to mentors, which helped ensure the mentees were partnered with someone who could help them reach their goals for the mentorship.

Here are just a few things last year’s participants had to say about the program.

“When using the online application, I really wanted to be paired with the person who said ‘the older I get the more I realize the less I know.’ When I had my first meeting with Jonathan, one of the first things he said was that quote, so the online pairing worked! 2016 Career Fairs

Our Benefits team processes claims and determines eligibility according to policies, rules and regulations. We’re always looking for benefits adjusters to join our team to better serve our Customers. The Benefits team as a whole consists of three main groups: the Customer Service Unit that handles general calls and sends information to the adjusters; the Disability Insurance adjusters, who handle short- and long-term disability claims; and the Supplemental Medical adjusters, who handle accident and cancer claims. Five Holiday Job Search Tips

With November starting this weekend, we’re officially entering the holiday season. Job searching through the holidays can take some extra patience, but while everyone else is thinking about turkey and eggnog, you can stand out from the crowd with these tips.
  1. Be patient and flexible. With year-end projects and people taking time off, scheduling interviews can get tricky. Suggest interviewing before or after work if that works better for the recruiter or hiring manager.
  2. Volunteer. This is usually a busy time of year for non-profits, so volunteering can be a great way to help others and make connections.
  3. Network. You’ll probably see more of your friends and family during this time of year. Make sure they know you’re job searching, and let them know what kinds of positions you’re looking for.
  4. Try a temporary job. Staffing companies are often flooded with requests for temporary help to fill in over the holidays. These positions can be a great way to get your foot in the door at a company you’ve been eyeing.
  5. Get ready for the new year. Sometimes hiring has to wait until the next year’s budget starts. Use this time to clean up your resume and online presence, practice interviewing and research companies. You’ll be ready to start applying as soon as positions are posted in 2016.
