What’s Happening at AFA I Volunteering, Running and Remembering

April 29, 2013 04:08 AM

DSC_0906 Just yesterday, thousands of people participated in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, including quite a few of my American Fidelity Colleagues. Those of us who weren’t running had the chance to work at the Water Stop in front of our buildings.

The marathon is designed to celebrate life and honor those lost in the Murrah building bombing in 1995. We all remember where we were on that day, and supporting the marathon runners is our way of ensuring we will never forget those who died and those who survived.

About 50 of us representing American Fidelity were here to pass out water, PowerAde and encouragement to the runners, as we have every year since the marathon began. Since our buildings are just three miles from the finish line, our encouragement is needed almost as much as the refreshment!

I’m always struck by how many participants take the time to stop and thank us for being there to serve when we’re all so in awe of their achievement of running 26 or even 13 miles. Seeing their grateful faces is all the thanks we need to keep coming back year after year.

We are proud to show our support throughout the community and specifically for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. This year was especially poignant as we remembered the bombing of the Boston Marathon just two weeks ago. Now, we have another event to remember when we participate in the Memorial Marathon, as runners or as volunteers.

Did you participate in the marathon in some way? Ran, volunteered, cheered someone one? Let us know in the comments.
