Wellness Challenge Winner

As we’ve talked about before, American Fidelity provides numerous opportunities for Colleagues to improve their health. But, we also understand how hard it can be to stay motivated during the holidays, so we held an NFL Wellness Challenge to help our Colleagues have fun while staying healthy through the busy holiday season. We had more than 200 Colleagues participate in the challenge, with 76 of them meeting the goal and scoring a touchdown. Those Colleagues were entered into a grand prize drawing of $350. I met with our winner, Teresa Davis, compliance analyst, to learn how she stays fit. Teresa’s wellness journey started back in 2009. Around Christmas time, a co-worker took a photo of the team and Teresa was shocked to see how much weight she had gained when she looked at the image. She knew she needed to make a change. “I was already a member of The Core, but hadn’t been going. I started by walking on the treadmill and adding distance each week. Then I started taking the exercise classes. I still go to those today. I love the 10.10.10 class because it makes me sore,” shared Teresa. To make fitness a priority, Teresa schedules time to work out so that she doesn’t miss classes. “It’s hard to get back in the habit if you miss a class, so I do my best to make it. The only time I miss is if I have a team meeting or event at the same time.” Teresa also made small changes to her diet by eliminating many processed foods such as chips, crackers and cookies. “I feel so much better now. I don’t get sick as often and have fewer migraines. My advice to someone just starting is simply to go do it. Find something you enjoy and keep doing it.” Teresa is using her winnings to help her continue to stay fit. She purchased new tennis shoes and workout clothes, along with a Fitbit. “The Fitbit has been eye-opening, especially to see how many steps I take each day and how much – or really how little – sleep get.” What keeps you motivated to make healthy choices?
