I talked to one of our legal secretaries, Lacey Courtney, about how AFA has helped her improve her health. Lacey always enjoyed being active and working out, but after the birth of her second daughter, she began to notice that the weight just wasn’t coming off like it used to. Knowing that she needed to make a change, Lacey began a weight loss challenge in January 2009. She lost a substantial amount of weight during the challenge and the motivation to keep that weight off prompted her to take advantage of her membership at AFA’s on-site gym, The Core. “An $8-a-month gym membership is amazing. I use The Core every day during my lunch break; it’s a priority of mine,” Lacey said. “If I couldn’t work out at work, I probably wouldn’t at all.” With a membership at The Core comes access to our trainers who are always there to give advice and help to Colleagues. “Our trainer Jessica helped me a lot. She’s just a really good encourager, and you can always go to her for a pick me up,” Lacey said. “She’s like a friend and a workout buddy.” Outside of the gym Lacey maintains a healthy lifestyle by eating smaller portions and limiting her sugar intake. She also eats a lot of fish, chicken and lean meats like venison since her husband is an avid hunter. One thing that Lacey pointed out as really making a difference is the fact that every night her family cooks at home and rarely eats out. Lacey started her wellness journey so that she could live a fit and healthy life for her daughters. Whatever your motivation to get healthy is, she encourages everyone to just do it. “The Core can seem intimidating but everyone is really nice. Start with something small like walking on the treadmill. The important thing is that you start,” said Lacey. “When I started I noticed how much better I began to feel. You’ll have more energy and you’ll sleep better. It all just fits together. It’s difficult, but it’s worth it.” What wellness perks do you wish your employer provided?
