Every October, I start seeing more and more pink – pink pins, pink bracelets, pink hats and especially pink ribbons. The color is a great reminder that the women among us need to be mindful of breast cancer. I did a little research this year and learned that nearly 300,000 new cases of some form of breast cancer will be diagnosed. We will lose nearly 40,000 of our mothers, sisters and friends to this disease. One in every eight women will have breast cancer in their lifetime. Men aren’t immune, either; more than 2,000 cases of breast cancer are reported each year in the United States. But the good news is that there are 2.8 million survivors of this disease, and more are being added to that number as we learn more about early detection. You can learn more from the American Cancer Society. I’m going to do my part by scheduling my annual mammogram. I’m also going to join Team AFA in this year’s Oklahoma City Race for the Cure. My Colleagues and I will join thousands of others on Oct. 20 as we walk and run to raise awareness and funding for research. American Fidelity supports us in that effort. The Company pays a portion of the entry fee for our Colleagues. And everyone who joins our Team – Colleagues, friends and family – will get a Team AFA T-shirt to wear to the event.
