One of the great aspects of working at American Fidelity is that we get to help provide financial protection to our Customers through our products and services. One of those products is disability income insurance, which can help protect your income if you become disabled and are unable to work. In honor of Disability Awareness Month, I want to share some information with you about this product.
According to the Council for Disability Awareness, one in four of today’s 20-year-olds will become disabled before they retire and more than 37 million Americans are classified as disabled, comprising 12 percent of the total population. If you became disabled, how would you pay your bills while you are unable to work?
While your medical insurance may cover the medical bills and your employer must allow you unpaid leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act, neither of these sources will provide you with income if you become disabled. It can take time to qualify for and receive Social Security Disability benefits and those typically do not provide you with the level of income you earned prior to your disability.
Disability income insurance can help protect your income by paying a percentage of your salary if you become disabled. Our founder believed that the most important asset any of us have is our ability to earn a living. He wanted to provide a product that allowed working people to help protect that ability. Today, we provide disability income insurance to our own Colleagues at no charge to them because of this legacy.
Have you or a loved one had to use disability income insurance – or wish you had? Let us know in the comments!
