Day in the Life: Mail Center

mail center When most of us think of the mail, we picture our own personal mailboxes and the iconic LLVs of the United States Postal Service. However, many corporations also have mail rooms where employees process mail and keep the business running smoothly. At American Fidelity, we have a Mail Center focused on delivering Customer mail to Colleagues and vice versa, helping ensure claims and payments are delivered to the right people in a timely manner, along with mountains of other business mail. They are a lifeline between our Customers and our Colleagues. I talked to Margaret Vickers, director of enterprise business services, about her experience managing the Mail Center and the work they do. “In any corporation, there are people who believe a mail room exists to deliver and pick up mail. What we have attempted to do is to broaden this mindset as to what actually occurs in a true Mail Center and what positive impact we can have on meeting the needs of our Customers.”  As you can see, there’s a lot involved in the process when you’re processing millions of pieces of mail a year. The Mail Center:

  • Places postage on more than 2.5 million pieces of mail a year
  • Packages and/or prepares for UPS mailing 21,000 packages and letters a year
  • Folds and inserts 2.2 million envelopes per year
  • Orders and distributes envelopes, letterhead, brochures and specialty items for all of AFA, filling about 400 orders per month
  • Ensures compliance with regulations when developing new envelopes or postcards
  • Delivers more than 21,000 parcels within AFA each year
  • Processes more than 27,000 address changes a year

The next time I receive my mail at work, I know I’ll appreciate the effort behind the scenes to get the information to me! Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work in a corporate mail room? Do you have any questions for us? Let us know in the comments!
