Day in the Life: Benefits

Hutton_Renee_004 During this time of year, many companies are wrapping up their benefits enrollment sessions and helping employees understand their benefits for the new year. American Fidelity is no exception. Since our benefits programs are a major factor in making us an employer of choice, I talked to Renee Hutton, our health and wellness team leader, about her job and what it’s like to assist Colleagues with their benefits. How would you explain what your position does to someone who isn’t familiar with that job? My position is responsible for ensuring AF offers competitive benefits that balance Colleague and Company needs with market trends and regulations. I’m also responsible for making sure we serve our Colleagues when it comes to health, retirement and leave benefits. What does a typical day look like for you? A typical day has several meetings and the expectation of having the unexpected pop up anytime! Serving our Customers in a timely, effective manner is priority one. What does your team do? We manage and serve Colleagues regarding their health, leave and retirement benefits, including Family Medical Leave; Americans with Disability Act leave; workers’ compensation; medical, dental, vision and supplemental benefits; pension and 401(k). How do you serve Customers? The Benefits team acts as the liaison between the Colleague and our benefits vendors; answers questions; serves as subject matter experts on the health, leave and retirement benefits mentioned above;  and foresees issues for Colleagues to help alleviate the unexpected. What does it take to succeed in your area? What advice would you have to someone seeking a job in the field? Job candidates need a lot of flexibility. They need the ability to change and adjust rapidly to the market, Company and Colleague needs and regulations. It’s our job to stay on top of it all! Why do you like your job? I like my job because I have an opportunity every day to make a positive impact on my Colleagues even when it is a difficult situation. Being able to help people is the most rewarding part of my job.
