For the past 15 years, thousands of runners have streamed down Classen Boulevard on the fourth Sunday in April while participating in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. With the race route for both the full marathon and half marathon passing right in front of our Home Office, we have the opportunity to demonstrate to the running world that American Fidelity lives up to the Oklahoma Standard that was established in the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing 20 years ago. This year, a record number of Colleagues, family members and friends turned out to man the water stop in front of our building. We were here from 6 a.m. to nearly 2 p.m. to dispense sports drinks, water and encouragement to all the runners. Already, many of those volunteers are making plans to come back next year, and to work a longer shift than they worked this year. “Had a fantastic time,” one volunteer said after the event. “It’s very nice to volunteer with people who want to support the runners and our city enough to get out on a cool Sunday morning and stand for hours passing out water.” While in past years, volunteers have served through hail, sleet, rain or scorching heat, this year’s weather proved nearly perfect. Though cool in the early morning hours, volunteers quickly warmed to the activity of filling cups, pouring water and keeping our section of the course clear of trash. It’s an honor to serve our community and a great opportunity for Colleagues to get to know one another outside the office setting! I know I’ve made many new friends by working the water stop, and I hope my fellow volunteers feel the same! What volunteer efforts help unite your co-workers and friends?
