Our Colleagues Help Make AFA a Great Place to Work![/caption] I recently had the opportunity to attend the annual Great Place to Work® conference. Being an employer of choice is one of our priorities at AFA, so each year we usually send one or two Colleagues to the conference to learn from other great places to work. This year, the conference was in nearby Dallas, so we were able to send a team of Colleagues, allowing us to attend most of the breakout sessions and hear best practices from other companies. During the conference, we kept hearing a common theme from the speakers – culture is what makes a company a great place to work. It’s not about the perks and benefits, although those are still good to provide and AFA offers everything from prescription deliveries to an on-site grill. But our culture is more than that. It’s who we are. So, who are we? We’re transparent. Our leaders are much more likely to overshare information than to keep things from Colleagues. We’re friendly. I recently helped our Company President, Dave Carpenter, hand out thank you gifts as Colleagues arrived for work, and he not only greeted many by name, he knew what projects they were working on, who was getting married soon, who had started a running regime and more, despite there being about 1,100 Colleagues at our headquarters in OKC. We’re innovative. We moved to an all-wireless environment at our new building, are one of the best places to work in IT and constantly develop new products and services to better meet our Customers’ needs. Of course, we use what we learn at the conference to teach all of our Colleagues. Our current, main culture-related training initiatives are:
  • Great Place to Work for Leaders
  • New Leader School
  • Working with the 5 AFs (core values)
  • StartSmart, our onboarding training program
  • Integration of the 5 AFs in applicable training courses
  • Culture Camp, a new program to help further immerse Colleagues in our culture
