You’ve probably heard me talk about our tagline, “Our Family, Dedicated to Yours”. It’s true, American Fidelity really cares about Colleagues and invests in not only us, but our families, too. One of the great things AFA does for Colleagues is awarding the John Rex Memorial Scholarship to children of two AFA Colleagues each year.

The John Rex Memorial Scholarship was first presented in 2007 in honor of John Rex, a past American Fidelity president. John was a staunch advocate of education and supporter of our Colleagues. Helping children of AFA Colleagues achieve their dreams through education is a great way to honor him.

This year the scholarship was presented to Christen Hickey, daughter of AFA Colleague Tom Hickey, and Katherine Koonce, daughter of Colleague Barry Koonce. I got to be a part of surprising these Colleagues with the news. You can really believe the legacy that John left behind and tell how much this means to them.

“Receiving the John Rex Scholarship is a great honor for Kate and our family,” Barry said. “Through her hard work and dedication in the classroom, school leadership activities, community service and athletics, I believe Kate epitomizes the spirit and devotion of John Rex, making this scholarship especially meaningful to her.”

“I was speechless when I heard that Christen had received the John Rex Scholarship,” Tom said. “I know there are many accomplished candidates for the scholarship and I’m grateful to have Christen recognized for this incredible honor.”

Both recipients will receive a $2,000 scholarship each year for up to four years. This is the seventh year the scholarship has been presented, marking 14 recipients. This is a great way to support AFA Colleagues and honor a past president who cared so much about education and the people working at this Company.
